Hero Signal

I have a question about Hero Signal:

You can only activate this card when a monster on your side of the field is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard as a result of battle. Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower monster from your hand or Deck that includes "Elemental Hero" in its card name.

Is this card activated in the damage step or in the battlephase?

I think in the damage step, because it says "is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard as a result of battle.", but I want to be sure that this is an exception of the damage step rules, so that your opponent can't chain Call of the Haunted on a Jinzo (for example) to negate it.

Judgeing by the timing of the card, it would have to be activated at the end of the Damage Step when the destroyed monster is physically sent to the Graveyard.

It's not an "exception". Null and Void is an exception since there's nothing on the card that says it can be activated in the damage step. This card explicitly states when it can be activated (which is the damage step). It's hard to be an exception to the rule when its condition is a rule ("effects that outright state they can be activatedi n the damage step").

Just clarifying a little.

Ah well... I always thought that these were the only cards that you could activate/will activate in the damage step:

- Quick-play spells, traps and effects that modify the ATK and/or DEF
- Quick-play spells, traps and effects that negate such things
- Counter-traps in general (I heard this somewhire)
- Flip-effects
- Graveyard effects
- Monster-effects that happen when a monster is destroyed as a result of battle

I always thought that all other cards/effects were exceptions.

THanks for clarifying it :)

All of that sounds about right, though now I think it would be more Appropriate to make the last one:
-effects that happen when a monster is destroyed as a result of battle

It would seem that future cards, and maybe some current ones I dont recall, would fit in just as easily as Hero Signal (aka other traps or quickplays)

Hey. I went to check the rulings on Null and Void since it was mentioned and was kind of annoyed by ruling #6:

You can chain "Null and Void" to "Reckless Greed". Since you cannot draw by the effect of "Reckless Greed", the effect of skipping 2 Draw Phases is NOT applied.

Can someone explain the logic in that? There is nothing in Null and Void that negates a drawing effect. The text simply states that both players see the cards that were drawn and discard them all to the Graveyard.

Why would the draw phase skipping be skipped??

Trigger Effects are usually excluded from the list of Damage Step effects since the triggers can happen most any time (this includes Graveyard and Flip Effects).

Usually the discussion of what can be activated during the Damage Step involves manual activation of effects, spells, and traps. In that case, the list would be what's listed in the FAQ (though I should double check it to make sure it's still accurate). And remember Null and Void is it's own category on that list.
