Patroid CRV-EN006

Patroid
Effect Monster (Machine / EARTH / 4 Stars / ATK 1200 / DEF 1200)

Pick up and look at 1 Set card on your opponent's side of the field, then return it to its original position. You can only activate this effect once per turn, during your Main Phase.

"¢ The effect of "Patroid" targets a card.

"¢ If "Patroid" is flipped face-down or removed from the field, its effect is reset and you can use it again that turn if you can get it face-up on the field again.

Patroid, over all, my 2nd least favorite Roid monster. It has mediocre stats of 1200/1200, and it's effect can be more easily accomplished by Seal of the Ancients or Mind Haxorz.

This card has um, essentially no comboes, except the Machine support.

This card is a machine, so it has Machine support. It is also Earth, so it gains Earth support as well.

This card has a lot going against it. It's sub-par stats will let most things kill it, worst case a Newdoria or a Pyramid Turtle. It's also only allowing you foresight into your opponent's plans, if it did something about it (like destroy the set card) it'd be nice. But it doesn't.

When playing this card, use it to check that your soon-to-be game winning play won't get spoiled by a nasty Torrential Tribute.

This card, in my opinion, shouldn't see play outside of control Machine decks and dedicated Roid decks. It's just not very good.

Overall I'm not that thrilled with how the Roid cards can function as a whole. They don't have much to their effects and it isn't anything real fantastic about them either. Patroid which is the card I'm reviewing seems to have one of the more attractive effects aside from Drillroid. It has some decent combos in a weenie deck but that's about it. It doesn't function well in the usual decks today and it's more of a waste of space in a deck than actual useful material to use. It pretty much is a dead draw in most situations.

There aren't a lot of combos for this card are with Raregold Armor, Metalsilver Armor, and Heart of Clear Water. Sure enough, these combos won't last long against decks that pack a Dust Tornado or two. Even decks that use Greenkappa or other methods in dealing with Spell/Trap removal. However, once this card is actually established on the field with one of the above cards (perferribly Raregold Armor or Heart of Clear Water) it can start working its magic for you in revealing what cards they have on the field. Naturally, this can help change the tides in your game.

The things that Patroid can offer you the most of is knowledge. If you reveal a set Torrential Tribute before you summon, you can clear that threat away with removal cards or face it head on. Since knowledge can be another form of a weapon to use against your opponent, it's a nice inexpensive way to know what cards they have on the field before you proceed with your plans that you've thought up for the turn while watching the field change from each card played.

The amount of time required to establish this card on the field takes a while. You have to have a stable defense before this card is played and even then this card can tend to be a dead draw. I'd probably suggest avoid using this card because of things like Mind Haxorz and Seal of the Ancients are just way better card selections to use.

I really wouldn't use this card in anything other than a Machine oriented deck or possibly a Roid deck. Outside of those two deck type selections, it wouldn't be a recommended card from the sheer lack of quickness this card setups. A large part of what I've seen that players like to have is a quick setup each turn with fast and very playable cards. It simply requires you to manage your hand resources to pull the needed combos off. In turn, if the deck is designed to utilize the effect or card properlly it shouldn't really matter then.

As far as ratings go for this card, I wouldn't really give it much thought outside the above mentioned decks. Patroid doesn't have many useful purposes and it isn't really that fantastic of a card in general anyway. So I would frown upon using it in any serious deck.
