hi there
feel stupid for asking this but earlier today on a duel against someone who was using a spirit deck when i killed one that was facedown he said that seeing as it was flipped up this turn it gets to return to his hand from the graveyard, now to me this seems not right, is that right that even if they are destroyed after being fliped up from facedown via battle they still return to the hand? if so that makes them incredibly broken.

Their effect of returning to the hand only applies if they are face-up on the field during the turn they were summoned/flipped face-up.

They do not return from the graveyard.

btw is it the same for wicked worm beast if it is in the graveyard?

It's similar. If The Wicked Worm Beast is flipped up as a result of battle and destroyed, it would be sent to the graveyard and not return to your hand. It follows the same rules as Spirit Monsters do except that it CAN be Special Summoned.
