Spirit Reaper Rival...

I just got done looking in the judges's rulings and it was ruled that
A) A Rival Appears targets.
B) If Spirit Reaper is targeted by A Rival Appears, then Spirit Reaper is destroyed and the effect fizzles.

Now when A Rival Appears came out, the rulings were given that you must have a card in your hand that matches the stars of the card in question in order to activate it.

Now the casual duelist might not realize this and throw in A Rival Appears and "burn" it against Spirit Reaper to stop the annoying barrier it provides.

However, if my opponent "burns" A Rival Appears that way, do I have the right to make my opponent show me their hand to prove they had a 3 star monster in order to properly activate things? Or do they just have to show me a 3 star monster? If they don't have it, how do you punish them for illegal activation?
 
If it were me, I'd only make them prove they had a 3 star monster in their hand. If not, then it would be declared an illegal activation and the card would be returned face down.

As far as punishment goes, I think a warning on the 1st offense would suffice, then escalating from there if they continue to attempt activation without the proper monster in hand.

But that's just me though...
 
There is no need for punishment as they cannot even activate the effect of "A Rival Appears" without having an Appropriate monster in their hand.

If they were to do so anyway, it would be a clear case of cheating and if Spirit Reaper is destroyed, I would ask that they reveal the card they chose for Rival's effect.
 
I would think the opponent would at least have to show you (the owner of Spirit Reaper) that there is a 3-star monster in his/her hand. Otherwise, they would not be able to activate A Rival Appears! properly.

Not sure about showing the entire hand, unless they claim they cannot show you a 3-star monster. In which case, it should be of your benefit to be able to see their hand to verify there is no 3-star monster.

As far as the punishment, I have no idea. Given a warning first time and then the 2nd infraction would cost them the duel or match?
 
Er...am I the only one who noticed the contradiction in the latest judges' list post on A Rival Appears?

Note the 4th ruling on Spirit Reaper:

When "Spirit Reaper" is targeted by an effect, "Spirit Reaper" is destroyed by its own effect AFTER resolving the effect that targeted it. For example, if "Spirit Reaper" attacks and "Magic Cylinder" is activated, designating "Spirit Reaper", first "Magic Cylinder" will resolve, negate the attack, and inflict 300 damage to the controller of "Spirit Reaper". Then, after that, "Spirit Reaper" is destroyed by its effect.
 
Wow, that was the slickest edit I've ever seen. Not even a retraction or an "oops!"

He might have gotten away with it too. If it weren't for those meddling kids and thier stupid dog!

Although, I did get a letter of retraction. It just got deleted from the official list. Very clever, and fulfils its purpose.

Correct! The player using "A Rival Appears" must special summon a level 3 monster in this example with "Spirit Reaper". If he/she cannot summon such a monster, it is an illegal activation. "Spirit Reaper" lives, the trap card is reset and a warning for first time offense should be issued.
