The "What If" Scenario for the game...

Da Twiggy Man!
This is more of a discussion on how the game would be if cards were taken in a more literal sence in what they do. This would more or less change the way we view the game and eliminate as well as create different rulings than what we have right now.

A literal approach to this would be taking every card effect and taking them to a literal sense. Naturally some mechanics such as Continuous Monster effects couldn't butt in the middle of a card resolving. Such as Ceasefire flipping up Jinzo.

But let's discuss the nature of the game by taking all the card effects by their literal meaning.

For example, look at Royal Decree. It states it will negate the effects of Trap Cards on the field. Now cards like Return from the Different Dimension have lingering effects that are on the field. Would this literal meaning of Royal Decree still not negate Return from the Different Dimension?

How about this situation too. You have Magician of Faith on the field and you activate Magical Dimension to Special Summon your Dark Magician of Chaos from your hand. In the literal sense of this situation, Dark Magician of Chaos wouldn't miss his timing, or would he? =)

Would a more literal approach to the card effects be more effective than deriving from possible multiple card text and rulings just to get a clear and decisive answer be more effective?

Also what about the literal meaning of Desert Sunlight? It says nothing about Flip Effects, yet we have a ruling that says they work. Would a process of making card text worded in the fashion the card is suppose to work on a literal stand point be easier for the game to progress in a less problematic approach?

=P Just some stuff I was theorizing over last night when I couldn't get to sleep. Funny how this kind of stuff pops into my head right before I go to bed.

Sorry Tkwiget I don't think they're getting into the spirit of this thread.

Guys--This is supposed to be for fun! Stop taking it so seriously! Here's another example of what happens when you take a text too seriously:

Abare Ushioni
Effect Monster (Beast-Warrior / EARTH / 4 Stars / ATK 1200 / DEF 1200)
Toss a coin and call it. If you call it right, inflict 1000 points of damage to your opponent's Life Points. If you call it wrong, you take 1000 points of damage. You can only use this effect once per turn, during your Main Phase.

Okay, I toss a quarter up in the air and call it: "QUARTER". I called it correctly, because it IS a quarter, you take 1000 damage.

Get it? okay, now you try one......

My favourite:

Mind Control
Normal Spell
Take control of 1 monster on your opponent's side of the field until the End Phase. This monster cannot declare an attack or be Tributed.

When a sentence uses "or" if at least one of the parts turns out to be true than the whole sentence is true.

Therefore there is 3 possibilities to make the last sentence true:
-The monster cannot declare an attack (but could be tributed)
-The monster cannot be tributed (but could declare an attack)
-(and what the card is really supposed to say:) The monster cannot be tributed nor be tributed.

So since it uses "or" it should be the controller's decision. Go ahead attack with the monster if you aren't going to tribute it. Or go ahead and tribute it when its not worth attacking with.

Now an issue that was brought up when it first came out was that the last sentence didn't say how long the cannot attack/ be tributed effect lasts. So it could be ruled that it would last forever.

The reason is my favourite is because it would be so simple to fix the card so that it says exactly what the ruling are.

Mind Control
Normal Spell
Take control of 1 monster on your opponent's side of the field until the End Phase; this monster cannot declare an attack nor be Tributed.

The semi-colon indicates that the two sentences are connected too closely for a conjunction, thus the effect would last only until the end phase (since that's what the other sentence says).
