John, that's what I was trying to explain. I get a lot of fun out of making a deck (such as Aggro; btw that deck is temporary) work the way I want it to rather than it actually winning. If I win, that's great, but in most cases I'll learn more when I lose. Such as how the deck is keeping up in consistent draws/hands and being able to work around people's strategies effectively without using a lot of resources.
The only reason I happened to retire my
Dark Magician deck was for the basic reason of, "I ran out of fresh material." and the same thing will happen even after Dimension Magic is released. Themed decks based of Attribute and Type might be a wonderful place to start a deck concept, but in the long run a winning deck doesn't need to have those as requirements to make it win. That's what my Aggro is about. Doesn't need to base itself around a monster type or attribute to give it a winning chance in a tournament. Btw, I do hate my own Aggro deck. <laughs>
If you want a themed deck, after EEN I'll be doing something VERY interesting with Dark Realm cards. Whether it works or not is hard to tell, but the fact the idea is rather innovative strikes me as a possible hateful deck to use in a tournament. Trust me when I say it has PLENTY of originality and theme to it. Note: It probably isn't the first thing you think it is.
Aside from that, themes can be based around a certain tactic such as Hand Disruption like
Time Seal and
Magic Drain or Trample monsters. There's Remove From Play decks (or Dimension Abuse) which also don't play off of any kind of monster type or attribute for their theme.
Greed,
Ectoplasmer, Burn, Exodia,
Final Countdown, and
Last Turn are themed decks. They aren't based around any one monster type or attribute. They follow a deck concept and excute it as best as the person can that built it. To me, it's pretty hard not to have a deck with some kind of a theme to it. Even an Aggro to me has some kind of theme to it when it isn't based around an attribute or a monster type. It could just be built around having an aggressive feel to it without any limiting factors to the deck construction.
Naturally, these are all my opinions.
EDIT: Everyone has their own opinion. Let's just leave it at that. No feelings were hurt really, just a difference of opinion.
