Jetroid + Fire Darts/Magical Exp.

skochtape1

D D Jester
Jetroids effect

At the time this card is selected as an attack target by your opponent's monster, the controller of this card can activate Trap Card(s) from their hand.

Fire Darts effect
trap

You can only activate this card when you have no cards in your hand. Roll a six-sided die 3 times, and inflict damage to your opponent's Life Points equal to the total result of the die rolls x 100 points.

Magical Explosion

You can only activate this card when you have no cards in your hand. Inflict 200 points of damage to your opponent's Life Points for each Spell Card in your Graveyard

My question is, if Jetroid is attacked and either of these traps are the only card in your hand. Do their effects resolve correctly?

I believe that the example of being able to tribute Jowgen for Lava Golem or Metamorphosis is out of date, as these rulings no longer appears on UDE's website, or even in the pop up window that occurs when you click on their links.

Metamorphosis tributes a monster as a cost, which would occur right after the card was activated, and since Jowgen would prevent its activation, the cost for that activation can't be paid.

Lava Golem would tribue two of you opponets monsters as part of its effect (I believe), but since that effect can't be activated, the two monsters can't be tribute, and Lava Golem is forced to remain in its owner's (most likely) hand.
Except that it was never on the web site, so it was not retracted from the website.

Is everyone comfortable with what they've seen here or would you like it posted to the judge's board?
Oh, sure, and ruin a good debate? You'd like that, wouldn't you!

Me? Ruin a good debate? Oh HECK no! If you haven't noticed....I tend to START them nearly as much as you do! <nudge>

If it were any other forum I'd hesitate to begin debate. Since, however, nearly everyone has demostrated that they can conduct a mature debate while giving each other respect and dignity I have NO problem whatsoever doing so and find it sends many off on learning seaches and tangents that benefit everyone.

This kind of debate only encourages learning and depth of understanding. How can that be a bad thing? :)

This is another reason why I ASKED if you'd like it posted to the judge's list....perhaps you're not though disecting it yet!

My 1 cent...

The Jowgen + Lava Golem ruling is an anomaly, and is a Special Summon from hand from an effect that is never activated. It might be a weird nuance.

Fire Darts on the other hand is straight forward... if you don't have an empty hand before even flipping it, you cannot attempt to use it. Having this card in your hand makes that 1 card in your hand, and doesn't meet the requirement. The same applies to Card D, Reload...and many others.

I disagree, the Jowgen rulings are not comparable.

Remember the activation requirements of cards such as Manticore that prevent you from sacrificing tokens, because they don't go to the graveyard. And also remember that Activation costs are part of the requirements.

So why can't the requirements be fulfilled DURING activation?

I'd like to see a more comparable ruling.

I honestly could see how people could look at this both ways:

1: The hand is not empty at the time of activation, making the timing incorrect. If you look at it this way.

2: The hand is empty when it is Activated. Making conditions for it ok. The effect should be able to resolve and has been legally activated.

When the card is activated, it is removed from the hand and sent to the field, making the size of the player's hand 0. This is the way I see it. The cards check for the requirements after activation, when they are on the field and their text is relevent. The player has no cards in hand after the one activated is on the field, so it is ok.

I think this is a good time to send the question to the judges list. This isn't saying that a response will even come for a couple of weeks, so there is still time to debate. Just coming up with an official ruling for situations like these would be nice.
